The optional workshops listed below are offered in conjunction with the conference to enhance your experience.
Please note that these workshops are separate from the course workshops which are included with your tuition on Sunday, August 1st.


Thursday, July 29 or Saturday, July 31, 1:30 5:30 pm. $60.
Wilderness Survival: This workshop is a hands-on skill building experience. You will learn how to construct shelters, obtain food and water, build fires with primitive tools, signal, track, routefinding and survival kits.
Friday, July 30, 1:30 - 5:30 pm. $60
Urban & Travel Survival: You have just lost all of your belongings and your passport in an earthquake or act of terrorism. Your hotel was destroyed, and your companion is missing. Few Americans are prepared to cope with this type of crisis. Urban and travel survival can be more challenging than survival in the backcountry. Learn how to travel safely and protect yourself.

Wilderness Navigation: Learn and use essential skills for trip planning and travel with map, compass, GPS, and altimeter. Something for everyone: beginner to advanced.

GPS Navigation: Get ready to use your handheld GPS anywhere: Third world, disaster areas, an unfamiliar city or the wilderness.
Saturday, July 31, 1:30 5:30 pm. $60
Wilderness Navigation Practicum: A great opportunity to learn, practice and hone your skills. Follow a compass bearing, verify your location, and interpret terrain while walking on and off trail at Big Sky.

Saturday, July 31, 1:30 3:30 pm. $40.
Ropes & Knots for Wilderness Medicine & Rescue: This workshop will teach you how to use ropes and tie knots for high angle rescue, swift water rescue, and improvised medical care.


Friday, July 30, 1:30 5:30 pm. $60
Practical Wilderness Medical Skills What They Dont Teach you in Medical School This popular intensive hands-on workshop, lead by Howard Donner MD, has limited enrollment and always fills up fast. Participants will learn and practice scene management, backcountry patient assessment, improvised splinting and trauma care, lifting and moving injured patients, and more. Includes all equipment, critiqued scenarios and simulations.

Thursday, July 29, 2:00-4:00 pm. $40
Basic Wound Management/Suture Lab: A practical workshop on suturing and improvised laceration repair in a backcountry environment. Participants will have the opportunity to practice basic suturing, stapling, taping, and tissue gluing techniques on pig limbs. Supplies and pigs feet provided.

Friday, July 30, 1:30 - 4:30 pm. $50.
Advanced survival Workshop: Take a journey back in time. A hands-on opportunity to learn how our ancestors built fires, worked with stone tools and made rope.


Saturday, July 31, 1:30 5:30 pm. $60
TRACKING: Learn the lost art of tracking from a veteran tracker experienced in both animal and man tracking. The ability to track will insure you will not be lost again and will open up a whole new world around you. Course will teach sign and human effects on the environment and how to help rescuers to find lost persons around the world.


Saturday, July 31, 4:00 5:00 pm. $20
Service and Volunteer Oportunities in International Medicine: This workshop will discuss medical aid organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, International Medical Corps, Partners in Health and other opportunities for volunteering and providing medical care in austere environments and developing countries.
