World-class whitewater rafting, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and trout fishing!

This exciting multi-sport Wilderness Emergency Medicine CME Course takes place in the spectacular northern region of Patagonia. This area has some of the most fantastic mountain scenery in the world, including giant peaks with awe-inspiring glaciers, beautiful pristine forests, and resplendent whitewater rivers.

Well start our Emergency Medicine CME Educational program in the picturesque resort town of Bariloche, Argentina. Well do some fantastic hikes into the Andes.

Next, we cross the Andes into Chile and the incredible Futaleufu River valley. The Futaleufu is considered to be one of the most beautiful and exciting whitewater raft experiences in the world! Well stay several nights at the fabulous Bio Bio camp right on the banks of the almost surreal turquoise Futaleufu.

Each day of this Wilderness Emergency Medicine CME course will be a new adventure! Several days will be filled spectacular, professionally guided whitewater rafting on the Rio Azul, the Rio Espalon, and the Futaleufu.

Well also do some amazingly beautiful horseback riding and hiking in the Andes. Well also be able to do optional mountain biking and flyfishing for feisty brown and rainbow trout.

The Wilderness Emergency Medicine CME lectures and workshops typically take place each afternoon before dinner. Each night well enjoy gourmet meals and great comraderie and stories from the day!

Itinerary - Northern Patagonia
Wilderness and Emergency Medicine CME Course

Day 1: Meet in the picturesque resort town of Bariloche, Argentina.
Day 2: Day hike in gorgeous Nahuel Huapi National Park. Overnight in Bariloche.
Day 3: Travel through Alerces National Park enroute to the fabulous Futaleufu River Valley in Chilean Patagonia.
Day 4: Class III Whitewater rafting on the Futaleufu - certainly one of the worlds most beautiful raftable rivers!
Day 5: Horseback ride (or hike if you prefer) 8 miles up the beautiful Rio Azul. Overnight at Deluxe Cascada camp at the base of at 120 foot waterfall.
Day 6: Several exciting options available: Guided inflatable kayak down the Tio Azul (class II - great for beginners) or Horseback ride farther up Rio Azul or relax at Cascada Camp.
Day 7: Lake Kayaking on Lago Espalon, one of the most beautiful lakes in Patagonia.
Day 8: Multiple exciting options: Class IV rafting on the Fuataleufu...or mountain biking... or Horseback riding...or fly fishing...
Day 9: Return to Bariloche

Howard Donner, MD: Dr. Howard Donner is renowned as one of the world's most experienced expedition physicians. He is a also a highly acclaimed speaker on Wilderness Medicine.

Testimony to Dr. Donner's dynamic speaking ability is that he has been prominently featured in two award-winning NOVA television documentaries including; "Deadly Ascent" which chronicles mountain medicine and research on 20,320 ft Denali (Mount McKinley); and "Everest - The Death Zone". Donner served as expedition doctor on the 1998 NOVA Everest expedition, which was featured in the television documentary: "Everest: The Death Zone".

  • Dr. Donner spent 3 climbing seasons as a rescue doctor on Mt. McKinley in Alaska for the National Park Service at the 14,000 foot medical / rescue station.
  • Dr. Donner has also worked on numerous other medical projects in the Himalayas including two seasons as a staff physician for the Himalayan Rescue Association.
  • He was the expedition physician on the first American ascent of Kangchenjunga, the world's third highest peak (28,000 feet).
  • Donner was chosen as an Olympic physician for the United States White Water Team in Atlanta in 1996.
  • Dr. Donner's extraordinary background in expedition medicine was the basis for 5 years of service as a medical operations consultant for NASA, where he was involved in the design of the Shuttle and International Space Station medical systems.
  • Dr. Donner is also co-author of The Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine (3rd edition was published in August of 2008).
