"Doctor on Everest": The World's Highest Medical Clinics
Dr. Luanne Freer opened the world's highest medical clinic in 2003, at Mount Everest Base Camp. Located at 17,500 feet, the clinic provides life-saving medical care to climbers, Sherpas and trekkers. Dr. Freer will share her fascinating story of emergency medical care in one of the worlds coldest and most austere environments.

"Impossible Dreams": first ascent of Everest's east face and eliminating blindness
Dr. Geoff Tabin is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the U. of Utah and Co-Director of the Himalayan Cataract Project. He was the fourth person to climb the 7 Summits, including the East Face of Mt. Everest. He co-founded the Himalayan Cataract Project which strives to eradicate preventable and curable blindness in the Himalaya through high quality ophthalmic care.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Outdoor and wilderness recreation have grown tremendously popular over the past two decades. Physicians and other health care providers should have an increased awareness of medical problems that are unique to the wilderness environment. The goal of this conference is to teach both practical and theoretical skills to health professionals, search and rescue personnel, and interested lay people. At the conclusion of this conference, participants will be able to identify, diagnose and treat medical emergencies and problems commonly encountered in wilderness environments.

ACCREDITATION:

Physician Credit:
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies for the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education through joint sponsorship of ACEP, CAL/ACEP, and Mountain Medical Seminars. The American College of Emergency Physicians is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.. The American College of Emergency Physicians designates this educational activity for a maximum of 23 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit (s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
ACEP:
This program has been approved by the American College of Emergency Physicians for 23 hours of ACEP Category I credit.
AAFP:
This program has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 23 hours prescribed credit by the AAFP.
Nurse Credit:
Under the new BRN guidelines, this course is also accredited for 23 hours of nursing credit.
EMTS:
National registered EMTS and EMT-Paramedics will receive 23 hours of continuing education credit toward Section II requirements.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
All physicians and health care providers interested in medical care in a wilderness setting.
