Medicine and the Spirit of Adventure

Wilderness Medicine, Medicine and the sprit of adventure

Wilderness and Travel Medicine is pleased and honored to be able to participate in fund raising and contributions to many wonderful non-profit charities. Thanks to so many of our wonderful faculty and friends who make this possible.

Global Health / Humanitarian Medicine Symposium

Every May for the past three years, WTM cosponsors the Global Health / Humanitarian Medicine symposium along with the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) and the University of Illinois Chicago Center for Global Health.

This symposium has been held annually in Santa Fe for the past 3 years in conjunction with the National Wilderness Medicine Conference. All proceeds go to

HHI and UIC and these wonderful organizations earmark the funds for worthy humanitarian causes. In the past 3 years well over $15,000 has been raised.

WTM Guatemala Wheelchair Donation Project

Every year, WTM sponsors a non-profit service project to Guatemala to deliver wheelchairs to needy children with disabilities. A wheelchair can truly be "life changing" for these kids. The project is done in conjunction with Hope Haven, a wonderful non-profit organization dedicated to providing wheelchairs throughout the third world. This year WTM and the CME participants on our Guatemala CME trip were able to sponsor over 50 needy children! It was especially gratifying because our group fitted and delivered wheelchairs to all 50 kids personally!

This week, during the Squaw Valley Wilderness Med conference, WTM sponsored two fundraising events for the Himalayan Cataract Project / Cureblindness.org. One event was a 7 mile group "fun run". The other event was a guided hike.

The "Fun run" and hike to benefit cureblindness.org project were a nice success! They raised a combined $2350. Wilderness Medicine will add an additional $1000, so we will send a check for $3350 to this wonderful charity.

Nepal Earthquake Relief

WTM CME guests on our Everest base Camp treks have raised over $15,000 to help repair damage from Nepal earthquake.

Wilderness Conservation Organizations

WTM is privileged to contribute to many wilderness conservation organizations including Nature Conservancy, Wilderness Society , Audubon, and the Ocean Conservancy.
